What is the UK Student Visa?

The UK Student Route visa (formerly Tier 4) is the primary visa for international students who wish to study at a UK educational institution. It allows you to stay in the UK for the duration of your course plus additional time before and after your studies.

With a Student visa, you can work part-time during term time (up to 20 hours per week) and full-time during holidays. After completing your degree, you can switch to the Graduate Route visa to work in the UK for 2 years without sponsorship (3 years for PhD graduates). For applications made on or after 1 January 2027 the standard duration reduces to 18 months, so applying by 31 December 2026 secures the full 2 years.
