I-20 strategy and university shortlisting
We focus on SEVP-certified universities — Texas system (UTA, UTD, UTSA), Arizona (ASU), Indiana (IU, Purdue), NC State, Northeastern, Stevens, NJIT, RIT, GMU, UC Riverside, San Jose State. Application list is 8 to 12 universities mixed across stretch, target, safety.
I-20 review is hand-by-hand: SEVIS ID, program code (must be STEM CIP if you want STEM OPT), tuition, living cost, financial responsibility statement. Errors in the I-20 are a refusal trigger and we have caught wrong tuition figures before, on issue.
Visa fees, SEVIS fee and policy thresholds are reviewed periodically by the US Department of State and SEVP. Confirm the current figures with our team before paying anything.
SEVIS, DS-160 and visa fee
SEVIS fee (currently USD 350 for F-1) paid at fmjfee.com. We pay this for you and store the receipt — it is mandatory at the consulate.
DS-160 is filled in person at our VV Nagar office. About 80 fields including detailed travel and education history. We do not let students fill DS-160 alone over WhatsApp — too many silent mistakes.
MRV visa fee (currently USD 185) paid through the US Travel Docs portal. The receipt unlocks OFC and consular appointment scheduling.
Mock interview programme
5 to 8 mock interview rounds with a counsellor playing the consular officer. We grade your answers on three axes: technical specificity, funding clarity, post-study honesty. Every round we tighten your story until your answers stop sounding scripted.
Common questions for engineering profiles: why this program over the closest alternative, who pays your tuition, do you have family in the US, what do you plan after graduation. We coach you to answer your real plan, not a memorised one.
Financial documentation — engineer-family profiles
First-year cost from I-20 (USD 35,000-USD 70,000) demonstrably available. We assemble parent ITR for 3 years, FDs, sanctioned education loan letter (SBI, BoB, Avanse, HDFC Credila), property valuations and any NRI sponsor affidavits with their US tax returns.
Round numbers and undocumented gifts trigger 214(b). Our checklist is built around the recurring weak spots we see in BVM/CHARUSAT family files — agricultural land valuation that is unsupported, an aunt's sudden FD, a shop closure right before the application.
OPT, STEM OPT and H-1B planning
OPT is 12 months of work authorisation post-graduation. STEM OPT extension adds 24 months — 36 months total — only if your program's CIP code is on the SEVP STEM list. STEM extension requires E-Verify employer and progress reports.
H-1B lottery is annual; STEM students get three lottery seasons over the 36-month runway, sharply improving selection odds. We pick programs from the I-20 stage with this in mind so program choice does not handicap you 3 years later. Post-flight we stay reachable for STEM OPT filing, employer questions and CPT vs OPT confusion.
