DET — the test in numbers
60 minutes total. About 45 minutes of adaptive questions, then 10 minutes of video interview and writing sample. Test fee is $59 USD (around 5,000 INR). Score range 10 to 160 in 5-point increments. Results in 48 hours via your Duolingo account.
Score equivalence (commonly cited): 105 ≈ IELTS 6.0, 120 ≈ IELTS 6.5, 130 ≈ IELTS 7.0, 140 ≈ IELTS 7.5. Universities typically ask 105 to 120 for direct admission and 120 to 130 for competitive Master's.
Sub-scores in four areas: Literacy, Comprehension, Conversation, Production. Some institutions ask for a minimum sub-score (e.g., 100+ in each) in addition to overall.
Why VV Nagar engineering grads tend to score well
Most CHARUSAT, BVM, ADIT students have a strong reading and listening base from English-medium engineering. The DET tasks that test those skills (Read and Complete, Listen and Type, Read and Select) reward exactly that base.
Where they leak: Speaking-related tasks (Listen and Speak, Read Aloud) when they rush, and the video interview when they're unprepared for the format. Both fixable in 4 to 6 hours of focused practice.
DET vs IELTS vs PTE for VV Nagar students
DET: fastest, cheapest, from home. Best for last-minute deadlines and when your shortlist confirms acceptance. Limited for visa-pathway evidence in some countries.
IELTS: most universal acceptance including all visa pathways. Best when you have time and want one test that works for any future intake.
PTE: machine-scored, 1-2 day results, accepted widely in Australia, Canada, UK. Best for students who want speed plus broad acceptance.
We don't pitch any one of these. The diagnostic plus your shortlist tells us which fits.
