Is APS mandatory for Germany?

Yes — from 2024 onwards APS Certificate is required for most Indian students applying to German universities. APS (Akademische Prüfstelle) verifies your Indian academic credentials are genuine and qualify for German higher education. Application is through the APS India portal, documents go to the German Embassy by post or in person, processing is 4 to 6 weeks, fee is around EUR 25. Without APS, most German universities will not even process your application. We start APS the day you walk into our Nadiad office.

What is a blocked account (Sperrkonto)?

Sperrkonto is the German blocked account holding approximately EUR 11,208 per year as proof of funds for living expenses. The amount was raised from EUR 10,332 in 2023. Money is locked in the account and released to you in monthly instalments (around EUR 934 per month) after you arrive in Germany. Three common providers: Fintiba, Expatrio, Coracle. The account opens online; funds transferred via SWIFT from your Indian bank. We handle the application from our Nadiad office. The amount is reviewed periodically; confirm the current figure before transferring.

Are public universities really free in Germany?

Mostly yes. Most public German universities charge no tuition for international students. The exception is Baden-Württemberg state, where international students pay roughly EUR 1,500 per semester. You still pay a 'semester contribution' (Semesterbeitrag) of EUR 200-350 per semester, which usually includes a public-transport pass for the city. Private universities (Jacobs Bremen, IU International, Munich Business School) charge tuition. We focus most Charotar families on public universities for the cost-to-quality balance.

Do I need to know German?

For English-taught master's at top public universities (TU Munich, RWTH, Heidelberg, FAU, Stuttgart), no — IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL 90 plus is enough. For German-taught bachelor's, yes — typically C1 (TestDaF or DSH). For daily life and part-time work, A2 or B1 helps a lot. Most of our Nadiad students who go for English-taught master's start A1 / A2 classes after admission to make their first months in Germany easier. Goethe Institut Mumbai is the standard for certified German.

How much money do I need for Germany?

Living expenses are demonstrated through Sperrkonto at approximately EUR 11,208 per year (reviewed periodically). Tuition at public universities is EUR 0 to EUR 1,500 per semester. Semester contribution is EUR 200-350. Health insurance is around EUR 110-130 per month. Plus airfare and a buffer. Total first-year cost for a public-university master's is approximately EUR 13,000 to EUR 16,000 — substantially cheaper than UK, Australia or USA at face value.

What is the post-study work option in Germany?

Germany offers an 18-month Job-Search Visa (Aufenthaltserlaubnis zur Arbeitsplatzsuche) after you complete your degree. During those 18 months you can take any job (full-time or part-time) while you search for a position in your field. Once you find a job in your field with a qualifying salary, you convert to a work residence permit and after 33 months (21 if you have B1 German) you can apply for the EU Blue Card or settlement permit. The 18 months is generous compared to most other countries.

How long does the German student visa take?

The National Visa for studies (D-Type) typically takes 6 to 12 weeks from your appointment at the German Consulate in Mumbai. Some applications take longer if administrative checks are needed. Combined with the 4 to 6 weeks for APS, you should plan a full year ahead of your Winter Semester intake. Most of our Nadiad students who start the process in October-November comfortably hit the next October intake.

Where do I attend the German visa appointment from Nadiad?

German Consulate Mumbai handles National Visa for studies appointments for Gujarat. The consulate is in BKC and slot booking is online through the consulate's official portal. Travel from Nadiad to Mumbai is 8 to 10 hours by train or road. We book the appointment, share a complete document checklist and brief you on the day-of-appointment routine.

Can I work part-time as a student in Germany?

Yes. Student visa holders can work 120 full days or 240 half days per year (full day is over 4 hours, half day is 4 hours or less). Working at the university (research or teaching assistant) does not count toward the limit. Minimum wage in Germany is EUR 12.41 per hour as of 2024, which makes part-time work meaningful. Many Nadiad students cover their semester contribution and personal expenses through 12-15 hours of weekly work.

What are TU9 universities?

TU9 is the alliance of nine major German Universities of Technology: TU Berlin, TU Braunschweig, TU Darmstadt, TU Dresden, Hannover, Karlsruhe (KIT), TU Munich, RWTH Aachen and Stuttgart. They are widely recognised globally for engineering and applied sciences, and are the typical target for BVM, MSU or CHARUSAT mechanical, electrical and computer engineering graduates from Charotar. Admission is competitive but tuition (at public TU9s) is free.

uni-assist is a centralised application service that processes international applications for many German public universities. You submit one application set, pay a fee per university (around EUR 75 for the first, EUR 30 for additional), and uni-assist forwards verified applications to your chosen universities. Some universities (like TU Munich for many programs) accept direct applications and bypass uni-assist. We map your shortlist accordingly so you do not pay duplicate fees.

What if my Germany visa is refused?

German consulate refusals usually cite specific concerns — APS issue, funding inadequate, motivation letter weak, language not appropriate for the chosen program. We file a Remonstrationsverfahren (formal objection) within one month, addressing the specific paragraphs of the refusal. If the grounds are severe we re-apply with corrected documents at the next intake or pivot to Ireland or Netherlands. We do not push automatic re-application without addressing the actual issue.

University admission and Zulassung

We focus on TU9 (Technical University of Munich, RWTH Aachen, KIT, TU Berlin, TU Darmstadt, Stuttgart, Hannover, Dresden, Braunschweig) for engineering. Heidelberg, Goethe Frankfurt, FU Berlin, LMU Munich for social sciences and natural sciences. FAU Erlangen-Nuremberg, Mannheim and Bonn for selective programs.

Once admitted you receive a Zulassung (admission letter). Some programs have an APS pre-check before issuing admission, so the order is: APS → applications → Zulassung → Sperrkonto → visa.

Most public university tuition is EUR 0 for international students; Baden-Württemberg state charges roughly EUR 1,500 per semester. Living costs in Munich and Berlin are higher than Frankfurt or Leipzig.

Language: most master's at top public universities are taught in English. German A1 is helpful for daily life; A2 or B1 is needed if you target a German-taught bachelor or some specific master's. Goethe Institut Mumbai is the standard for certified German classes.

Visa application and post-arrival

National Visa for studies (D-Type) is filed at the German Consulate in Mumbai. Documents include APS, Zulassung, Sperrkonto confirmation, health insurance, motivation letter, CV and academic records. Standard processing is 6 to 12 weeks.

Post-study: Germany offers an 18-month Job-Search Visa (Aufenthaltserlaubnis zur Arbeitsplatzsuche) after completing your degree. If you find a job in your field within those 18 months, you can convert to a work residence permit and eventually settle. We map this from program selection.
